At Momentum for Mental Health in San Jose I worked as a clinician and case manager where I used short term Solution Focused Therapy and ran group therapy for clients primarily diagnosed with schizophrenia. Momentum is an agency contracted with the County of Santa Clara and requires very specific documentation. From leading these groups I became more skilled at using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Anxiety Reduction and Mindfulness. This was an experience that was near and dear to me due to the population and my reason for getting in to mental health work. Most recently I worked in the criminal justice program helping with clients in jail diversion to re-enter into society. This work has been an incredible learning experience understanding how our court and custody system works and how we can help more people with mental health challenges to get housing instead of living on the streets.

At Airport Marina Counseling Service in Los Angeles I was lucky to work with clients long-term in this nonprofit, community-based mental health clinic. In long-term therapy I used a Psychodynamic approach which helped to see how our challenges from childhood can carry through to adulthood. So what once worked as a child to help us survive now hinders us as adults. This rigorous and in-depth training allowed me to delve into developmental theories, with careful attention to the family system.

At San Martin de Porres Counseling Center in Lawndale I led court approved groups for Domestic Violence, Parenting, and Anger Management. But perhaps the most difficult challenge I had was working with teenage boys in the Anger Management group and Drug and Alcohol group. These were boys from a group home that experienced complex trauma growing up and required extreme patience and understanding.
